What is Second Grade learning about in October/November?

Daily review of focus skills, high frequency words, robust vocabulary that links to our weekly story, and phonics skills. We continue to work on reading comprehension, using context clues, thinking critically, as well as fluency and expression while reading.

Number concepts, even/odd recognition, problem solving, math facts review. Next we will be moving onto data and graphing.

We begin a new series this month that not only has word lists composed from phonics skills but we also work on proofreading and using our words in context.

We are learning how to use our phonetic skills to break down and understand new words. We continue to dig deeper into grammar and the break down of our written language.

Our Reading series corresponds to our writing prompts for second grade. The current writing genres we are focusing on are Personal Narratives and Humorous Fiction.

Social Studies/Science
We are currently working on wrapping up our thematic Community unit in Social Studies. Our next thematic unit will be from our Science curriculum.

Daily practice of learning prayers and having a deeper connection to our faith. We are currently working on learning about the Seven Sacraments and how we will be preparing ourselves to receive two of them this year.

Second Grade is successful
with virtual and in-person learning!
As we progress and work through the Covid-19 pandemic I want to reassure all parents and students that SJS teachers have not given up.
We are here for you!
SJS has many ways to teach you with all the technology tools at our fingertips.
We are prepared to go virtual at any time so your child will continue to learn and move forward!

Learn about your teacher:

My name is  Mrs. Julie Ridings and I will be your child's second grade teacher this year. I look forward to teaching your child many new skills and concepts throughout this school year. I graduated from Bloomsburg University with a dual degree in Early Childhood & Elementary Education. My background consists of ten years of teaching experience in a Catholic school. Seven of those years were spent teaching second grade. My teaching methods are based on a positive learning atmosphere in the classroom with respect for faith, children and teachers.

Thank you for taking an active role in your child's education. If you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to contact me at my e-mail or on the ParentSquare app:

Thank you for your kindness and support for education at SJS!

All homework is done virtually this year on the SeeSaw app/website. Assignments are given on Monday for the week and are due that Friday. This is a great way to keep students comfortable with virtual learning if the need ever arises again due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

I would like to give the parents/guardians a brief explanation of the colored smiley face that is inside the homework agenda. The color of the smiley face will correspond to my behavior chart we use in class. This is a quick way for you to chart your child's daily behavior progress.

Can you spot the classroom theme for this year??!  wink

One more new book case would be a great help to organize our classroom library. We have so many story books that vary in sizes so these shelves would work wonders for us! Thank you in advance if you find it in your heart to donate!
